Kitbash and Weather a Building: Part 2

KITBASH & WEATHER A BUILDING
TERMS USED IN THIS ARTICLE
DRYBRUSHING: Using a flat brush, dip it sparingly into the paint & wipe it off on a paper towel until there is hardly any left on the brush. Drag the brush over the surface of your model but don’t paint it. The residue on your brush will contact the raised part of the kit leaving a lighter color thus highlighting those details. Always use a lighter shade when dry brushing to allow for the contrast.
WASHING: Mix your paint with a generous amount of thinner to make a more liquid than paint slurry then paint it on your model. Wipe off the excess.
DOT FILTERING: Technique is described in the article.
HINT: Practice, practice, practice always yields better & better results. Try it on old pieces you may deem expendable. You may discover the experimental piece is worth keeping. I’m always trying new ways of weathering models.
PART 2
With plenty of extra wall sections, I decided to make a 2 story building. Using plastic strips, I carefully aligned top & bottoms & glued them together. You can see the strips in these pictures & are essential to making the halves sturdy. Window glazing was also added in this step.

Now for something really radical. Besides model railroading, I’m also model armored vehicles, or as we are known, a “Tread Head”. I picked up this technique & it really works. You take dots of different color paint & speckle them all over the surface of your model. Then take a wide brush dipped in thinner, wipe it off until almost dry, & drag, scrub the brush over the dots blending them in. It really works! You still have your base color, but subtly add depth & more color top the model. Check out these photos.

After using the dot filtering technique, the details were enhanced and dry brushed to make them stand out. Next, a set of stairs and 2nd floor porch were added using the steps that came with the kit & railings from the parts box. Filler putty was sued to close the gaps in the handrail.

And there we have a 2-story building bashed from wall parts & pieces from the parts box. Still have some parts left. Stay tuned!
